Assignment 2 – First relief prints

Task 1 – I have submitted a test print and the corresponding notes on the tools that I used.

Task 2 – I have selected three single colour prints to represent my theme of place – the coast. These are not my favourites as I prefered the prints I made using transitional colours, however I am meeting the brief. I have used different paper, single colour, explored coloured background and different sizes.

Task 3 – I have submitted my sketchbook, supporting and preparatory ideas along with a selection of prints that I feel are the best that I have done within the brief of this project. They are of varying colour combinations, on different papers and using different registration methods.

Reflection

Demonstration of technical and visual skills – My sketchbook I believe has improved as I have found interesting subjects and ideas to observe and record, sketching in black ink has given me extra confidence as I feel freer and more relaxed, which I believe has led to looser work. I have dipped into a few books, both technical and artists, and sought assistance from on-line forums to further increase my knowledge and help improve technique.

Quality of outcome – Planning my work was essential for this assignment as I knew that I was going to be taking a month out. I actually managed to book days out for completing my work and this has led to a more relaxed approach with less last minute panicing.

I have taken on board tutor feedback, gone bigger, looked at collage and researched suggested artists, which in turn has I think inflenced some of my decisions and output in this assignment, for example Sandra Blow (use of loose circles), Hetty Haxworth (overlapping colour), Angie Lewin (mark making) and Anne Desmet (a journey through the linear).

I still having messy issues, which does effect the visual quality of my work, though this has become less since discovering the use of wipes and vegatable oil for cleaning. But I do need to keep telling myself that I am a beginner and lots of practice and research is needed to move my printing skills forward.

Demonstration of creativity – I have continued to experiment with ideas, colour and cutting techniques alongside my work for each task. This has helped me see things that were not apparent to me beforehand, for example the tidal channels in the pebbles print, and this has helped further development of my work. I have tried to take on board tutor comments about exploring fewer subject matters and while I have chosen to explore ‘the coast’ I have tried to restrict myself to fewer subjects within that framework.

Context – As I’ve moved through this assignment I’ve tried to ask myself why I am choosing to explore subject matter and artists , extracting ideas and applying them to the tasks at hand, and hope that I have recorded elements of these thoughts in my learning log. I know it still needs more work, as does my sketchbook and there is still much improvement to be built on.

Forward pointers –

  • Explore colour combinations and use of extender, but try to keep colour choices minimal and explore shades of colour.
  • Pay more attention to cutting of lino edges
  • Investigate coloured papers
  • More sketchbook work
  • Continue to improve on recording intention and meaning, WHY?
