Assignment 4 – Collagraph prints in response to abstraction

Task 1 – (Project 11). I have submitted a selection of prints, three of which are below, along with a brief description of the materials used. This can be found in my sketchbook.

Task 2 – (Project 12). I have submitted a selection of prints, four of which are below.

Notes on colour, shape and materials can be found in my sketchbook, but mainly on this learning log under Project 12. https://billydooprint1.home.blog/project-12-developing-collagraph-plates/

Reflection

Demonstration of technical and visual skills and creativity

The exercises for this assignment have allowed for lots of experimentation, be it inks, materials, composition and visual translation, however, more constraint on my behalf is probably needed and sometimes it’s a question of knowing when to push the experiment ‘stop’ button.

Having said that I have persevered and researched damp paper techniques and now have one that I am happy with. I know that materials need to be fairly similar in thickness, looser ink worked well for me within this print discipline and I’ve begun to explore adding other media alongside printing ink, ie: wax pastel.

Looking back on notes from previous assignments, I am beginning to realise that I need to find a subject and process that truely interests me, in this way I become more relaxed and confident in my ideas, mark making and technical skills, just sometimes maybe a little over excited, which, in turn makes me forget some of the fundamentals such as registration and paper size.

Quality of Outcome

Following my tutor comments regarding the work of Scarlette Homeshaw and her response to the previous layer rather than plan, I have tried this time to work without much plan, responding more to my sketches, notes, imagination and previous colour and texture as I moved from one experimental print to another.

I have been happier and more relaxed using this responsive method of working and I think that this has been reflected in my printed work.  However, I would add that I still need to be a bit cleaner and take more care to marry up paper with plate.

Context

This has been an assignment that I have thoroughly enjoyed, not just for the collagraph printing but also the reading and research I have done in respect of the abstract form.

I think my reading and better understanding of the world of ‘abstract’  has enabled me to relate and contribute more towards my sketchbook work, not only recording idea’s and visual elements, both real and imagined, but also extracting ideas to move my work forward.
