Mike Rennie: Edgeways: Land and Sea

A lamp-post flyer for this local village exhibition was intriguing; collage!? Which quite a few of the works on show were, alongside a few oil paintings, they implied found objects of beach and industrial rubbish, purposefully arranged.
Rennie is interested in the context and visual narrative that form relationships within his compositions, some of his works are straightforward depictions of things he has seen, others, especially collages have been re-invented and further developed into something completely new.

In the oil painting Nocturn 1, it interestingly appears that a wire mesh (similar to those found on disposable BBQ’s) has been used as a form of stencil, through which paint has been applied. It’s making me think forward to collagraph and building layers of colour with texture and has given me an idea for adding a mesh texture to one of my sketchbook items.

Similarly with Sicily, I like the way that the structure of the wood and roofing felt build on the shape, textures and colour of the objects, to form something that you may find washed up on a beach, part of a storm damaged boat or shed.
While nothing at this exhibition is in the form of print I have looked at and chosen a couple of pieces to see if I can explore and visualise how I could perhaps translate my thoughts of each into print. As both painting and collage build on layers of texture and colour, I visualise translations in monoprint, lino cut, screen printing and maybe collograph.
